1. How often does a business need to change their website?

Well, you don’t need to do it daily for most businesses unless things change within your business daily. For example, a restaurant may have daily specials to update. For most businesses, though, a seasonal update is sufficient. The best way to know is to keep track of the amount of traffic your website gets and ask your clients if they visit your website very often, or at all.

Some things you can do to that will keep your website fresh are:

  • Keep the contact info, hours and location(s) current
  • Make your seasonal products and specials featured
  • Update high-quality photos
  • Keep your social media accounts current – this is where many clients start then they go to your website

2. Do websites need to be rebuilt?

Not necessarily. As long as you make an update every 3 to 4 months, your website is okay. Again, you want to keep track of the traffic to your website and ask your clients about their use of your website.

When would your website need an update?

  • The current design and layout are just plain outdated
  • Any part of your website is broken, such as links not working
  • The focus and purpose of your business have changed

3. What is the best way to manage website content?

Creating a genuine representation of your company, products, and services in the content will keep your website on track. Finding what works or doesn’t work for you, and then scheduling consistent updates for your website and your social media accounts.

Some suggestions on how to manage this would be:

  • Either write your content or hire a freelance writer to write batches of content then publish it here and there over time
    Keep a list of the projects and the topics that you want on your website.
  • Engage your employees to contribute to it by taking pictures or writing about things from their perspective.
  • And Elsewhere.

Your website itself and your social media account aren’t the only places that need your attention. Customers find you by way of online directories and search engines. So, you want to be sure to keep them updated with any changes to your business format. Check them from a consumer side to make sure the address, directions, hours and phone numbers are all correct. For a small business, it is well worth your effort and time to maintain your company’s online presence. There isn’t any need to be overwhelmed with updating daily, but you should definitely define a routine and schedule and stick to it. Once it becomes routine, you won’t see it as a bothersome task.
